Stellite - The trade name of a group of nonferrous alloys used for cutting tools and other purposes, in which the hardness is an inherent property of the alloy and is not induced by heat treatment. The alloys are very resistant to corrosion and abrasion, and retain their hardness at a red heat. Since they cannot be forged they must be cast direct to shape. They are used in solid (cast) and tipped cutting tools; in plug, screw and tap gauges; on the valves and valve seatings of engines; as shear blades, and in turbo supechargers. Stellite hard facings are used, and are applied by the usual welding methods. Hard facing rods are used as electrodes in welding. Hardness 370-475 B.H.N. (see following table).
